“As usual, Maine is leading the country in promoting the transparency of health care information, and in rewarding hospital quality with payment incentives. As a Maine native, it is personally gratifying for me to see the Maine Health Management Coalition serving as a national role model.”

"If you want to see the future of health care reform, look at what's happening in Maine.  The Coalition's innovative programs for quality and cost measurement, employer and consumer engagement, and health care payment and delivery reform will likely be a model for the nation in how to successfully reduce health care costs and improve the quality of care for citizens."

The Maine Health Management Coalition Foundation is the designated Leapfrog Roll-Out Site for the state of Maine.  Regional Roll-Outs are local efforts in markets where Leapfrog members work with key stakeholders to advance Leapfrog’s mission by increasing the availability of public information about  of the quality of individual hospitals.

The Regional Roll-Out strategy is used to integrate community-wide, multi-stakeholder collaboration into Leapfrog’s national, purchaser-driven initiative. Regional Roll-Out leaders invite local purchasers, hospitals, health plans, physicians, labor unions, consumer groups, and others to participate in implementing the Leapfrog action plan, described below. These stakeholders develop community-focused goals that align with Leapfrog’s purchasing principles.

As a Regional Roll-Out site, the Maine Health Management Coalition Foundation's main task is to encourage local hospitals to publicly report their progress on the implementation of Leapfrog’s four recommended quality and safety practices or ‘leaps’: implementation of computerized physician order entry (CPOE) systems, to reduce hospital medication errors, staffing ICUs with specially trained doctors or intensivists, referring patients to hospitals with the best results for treating certain high risk conditions and other safe practices endorsed by the National Quality Forum. The MHMC performs this task by inviting hospitals’ participation in the Leapfrog Hospital Quality and Safety Survey, and by publicly reporting the information to inform local consumers and reward and recognize top performing hospitals.
