Rising to the Challenge
The Commonwealth Fund has issued a report, “Rising to the Challenge,” that assesses the performance of healthcare systems in each of the 306 Hospital Referral Regions identified by the Dartmouth Atlas. Maine has two Hospital Referral Regions, and each of them earned a ranking in the top quartile!
Like the Commonwealth Fund’s earlier assessments of national and state healthcare systems, “Rising to the Challenge” assesses four dimensions of local health care systems’ performance – Access, Prevention and Treatment, Potentially Avoidable Hospital Use and Cost, and Healthy Lives. The Portland Region earned a top quartile ranking in each of the four dimensions! It’s very favorable overall result was attributable in large part to a ranking of 3rd on the nineteen measures of performance included in Prevention and Treatment. The Portland region shared this ranking with six other Regions, one of which was the Bangor Region.
